 This week's list

1 Thing I Think Is Great:

I truly admire Rashida Jones. She's unbelievably talented and intelligent but also funny and grounded. I loved this interview because she clearly thinks deeply about her work and what she's going to commit herself to. Not every TV comedy star also went to Harvard and makes documentaries on the side. I love what she says about learning from her dad that "you have to always be a student. There's never an end to learning." From Sam Jones' fantastic Off Camera interview series, Rashida Jones: "Make Decisions from Love, not Fear".

1 Thing That Made Me Laugh:

Every year, lots of comedians put together "character reels" where they show off their writing and performance in the hopes of booking gigs. Most of the time, they only get watched by supportive friends and maybe a casting agent or two. For the most part, they're not much fun to watch if you don't know the comic. But Matt Rogers character reel is hysterical. Matt and I have some mutual friends on Facebook, where I first saw this, and it had me laughing from start to finish. It's so clever and original. I think my favorite character is "New Igor" but they're really all great. I would not be surprised at all if Matt got booked on a TV show off of this reel. It's that funny. Matt Rogers Character Reel 2016

1 Interesting Thing:

For several years, I worked helping to train new teachers for the Sposato Graduate School of Education. They're a pretty remarkable institution that's trying to get new teachers intensive instructional training before sending them out on their own into classrooms. That shouldn't be a revolutionary idea, but it really is. The whole idea is that great teaching is a skill that can be taught and so we should approach new teachers the way we approach training new doctors. I could not have more respect for the people I worked with at Sposato and I'm so glad they're getting recognized. This article from The Economist highlights some of their successes and touches on many of the big issues in education that I think often get overlooked: how to train/support teachers, how to create opportunities/incentives for teachers to stay in the classroom, and how to use data to ensure we're actually making an impact. It's definitely worth a read. Teaching the Teachers

 This week's list

1 Thing I Think Is Great:

Mike Birbiglia's latest movie, Don't Think Twice, is great. It's about what happens to an improv group when one of its members gets cast on TV. But it's really about how to navigate success and jealousy and figuring out what exactly you want. It's also painfully accurate when it comes to the comedy scene in NYC. The screening I went to included a Q&A and one of the things Birbiglia said afterwards really stuck with me. He said that in his twenties, everyone was chasing the same thing (being cast on SNL), but he only found success in his thirties when he stopped trying for that and thought about what actually made him happy and what made him unique. The always excellent Dana Schwartz interviewed Birbiglia about the film and his career: Mike Birbiglia Wants You To Know Life's Not Fair

1 Thing That Made Me Laugh:

Dan Chamberlain is one of the most magnetic live performers in NYC. Between his deep voice and his theater chops, he sells even the silliest premise as dead serious. I laugh every time. I recently re-discovered this hilarious four minute sketch where Dan just makes fun of how Nelly Furtado's lyric "I'm like a bird, I only fly away" doesn't make any sense. Or, if you're looking for a classic, there's always Dan's masterpiece: Everyone's Upstairs Neighbors (h/t Tao Yang)

1 Interesting Thing:

Mollie West is a writer and Liz Fosslien is a cartoonist. They've been collaborating on a series of articles about the nature of work. They're funny and charming and always leave me thinking about things in a new way. This particular piece is ostensibly for introverts, but I think it's a really interesting look for anyone at how creativity works. From poets to painters to choreography, Liz and Mollie look at what people need to make art. 4 Ways to Make Space in Your Brain to Create

 This week's list

1 Thing I Think Is Great:

I just started work as a staff writer on the new NatGeo Explorer TV show. Our first episode airs in November, so I'll let you know when you can actually see it. In the meantime, it's my first real job in television and I've been learning a ton. One of the cool people I'm getting to work with is Sharon Shattuck. Sharon is an animator and documentary filmmaker with such a unique and interesting style. I've been having so much fun watching her work and brainstorming segments that she might be able to do. Here's a fun short she made about the extremely underrated adventurer and animal collector A.R. Wallace. The Animated Life of A. R. Wallace

1 Thing That Made Me Laugh:

Gary Gulman is a legendary standup. He's got a charming stage presence and he's a fantastic joke writer. I've seen Gary perform for crowds of thousands and at bars with twenty people. He is always hilarious. A few years ago, Gary came to a show I was hosting and told this amazing story about a documentary film he'd watched. This Wednesday, Gary performed a polished version of that story on Conan. It's so good. I think about it every time I send a letter or order from an omelette bar. Gary Gulman Standup

1 Interesting Thing:

Ben Hubbard has an astonishing piece this week in The New York Times about a member of the Saudi vice police who woke up one day and decided everything he'd been enforcing was a lie. The story of Ahmed Qassim al-Ghamdi's change of heart and its consequences is a fascinating look inside modern Saudi Arabia and Wahhabism. Hubbard's piece reads like a thriller and yet it's just the kind of in-depth look at religion and politics that we need more of from our newspapers. A Saudi Morals Enforcer Called for a More Liberal Islam. Then the Death Threats Began.
