Pop-Up Magazine (San Francisco, CA)

Pop-Up Magazine is a touring “live magazine” show, created for a stage, a screen, and a live audience. Contributors tell vivid, new, multimedia stories accompanied by illustration, animation, photography, and an original score performed onstage by our musical collaborators, Magik*Magik Orchestra.

This fall, Pop-Up Magazine is heading on its first themed tour — The Escape Issue — produced in collaboration with our sister publication, The California Sunday Magazine. We could all use a little escape. From politics. From the past. From hostile countries and climate change. From the Internet. From negativity. Maybe even from ourselves. Join us for an immersive night of storytelling devoted to escapes big and small, daring and mundane, physical and mental. Past contributors include bestselling authors (Michael Pollan, Alice Walker, Susan Orlean), award-winning documentary filmmakers (Ava DuVernay, Alex Gibney, Barry Jenkins), prominent radio and podcast producers (Ira Glass, Jad Abumrad, Kelly McEvers), renowned photographers (Larry Sultan, Alec Soth, Katy Grannan), musicians and actors (Beck, Kumail Nanjiani, Sasheer Zamata), as well as a wide, eclectic group of emerging media makers.  Tickets and details here

Uptown Showdown (NYC)

The Head makes us better planners and better manipulators; the Heart opens us up and gets us squashed, too. Tonight, neurotics battle drama queens as we bring a long-simmering feud between thinkers and feelers to a boil.

The popular comedy debate series invites two teams of funny folks, from the worlds of stand-up and late-night television, to tackle topics of great importance to pop culture, such as which pets are superior, cats or dogs, and is it better to be comfortable or fashionable? The verbal sparring and all-around absurdity only stops when the audience chooses the winner. Featuring Chris Duffy (You're the Expert), Fareeha Khan (Reductress), Aparna Nancherla (Corporate), Jess Salomon (StandUp NBC Finalist), and more! Hosted by Matthew Love. Tickets and details here

You’ll clutch your pearls in shame and disgust. And hopefully, you’ll come again. Theme: Mothers Tickets and details

No Hard Feelings book release (NYC)

Join co-authors Liz Fosslien and Mollie West Duffy to celebrate the launch of their illustrated book No Hard Feelings: The Secret Power of Embracing Emotions at Work. The book is a visual exploration of how to embrace emotion at work without letting it run wild, and answers questions like: Where’s the line between sharing and oversharing at work? How should we deal with a colleague who constantly interrupts us? How can we create a culture of belonging? And is it possible that caring less about our jobs could be the key to success?

Quiet's best-selling author Susan Cain says No Hard Feelings is "a must-read that topples the idea that emotions don't belong in the workplace." The book has also received advance praise from best-selling authors including Adam Grant, Laszlo Bock, Chris Voss, and Kim Scott.

The evening will feature a Q&A with Liz and Mollie, book signings, and several fun emotions-at-work activities (including the opportunity to design your own stress ball). Details and FREE tickets here
