SHOW UPDATES:

CHARLESTON, SC:
Thanks so much to everyone who sold-out Thursday night's show! I didn't know what to expect from my first time in South Carolina, and you blew my expectations away. If you couldn't get in on Thursday, I'm hosting Charleston STEM Fest today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Brittlebank Park. It's free and open to the public. It's also the only show I've ever done that features mascots line dancing, chemical explosions, and several live hawks.  Link

NEW YORK, NY:
Tuesday, February 16 at 8 p.m. Which is better: children or pets? I'll be taking the side of humanity in this epic showdown featuring me, Maeve Higgins, Jo Firestone, Baratunde Thurston, and a few surprise guests. Link

Friday, February 19 at 7 p.m. Evan Barden and I host another edition of An Hour Abroad. Each month, we give you the full experience of having studied abroad (language skills, delicious foods, and insider knowledge) in only 60 minutes. This month, we take the audience to Romania, with help from celebrity Romanian Jo Firestone. Link

You can also see my full schedule up on the website now.

Ok, on to this week's list.

1 Thing I Think Is Great:

Megan Tan is best known for her autobiographical podcast called "Millennial." But she's building herself a little podcasting empire up there in Maine and all of her work is great. As I was digging into her projects, I came across this new show that Megan's helping produce. It's called Outside/In and it's hosted by Sam Evans-Brown. Megan and Sam put together one of my favorite episodes of radio that I've heard in a long time. It's the story of a heated legal battle over whether or not people should be able to drink champagne on top of Mt. Katahdin after they finish the Appalachian Trail. On one side: history, park rangers, and an eccentric millionaire canning magnate. On the other: an extreme athlete named Scott Jurek and a bottle of bubbly. The episode is only 18 minutes long, but I've been thinking about it all week. Champagne on the Rocks

1 Thing That Made Me Laugh:

It'll be no surprise to readers of this email that Jo Firestone makes me laugh. I have recommended her work over and over. Now you finally have a chance to own a piece of Jo's highest profile show: Punderdome 3000. It's a live pun championship that Jo hosts with her dad, Fred, who happens to be a Rodney Dangerfield impersonator. Punderdome brings together a delightfully weird group of humans  to shout out their favorite puns and celebrate the worst groaners around. Jo and Fred have turned Punderdome into a card game so you can play at home with your own friends and your own Rodney Dangerfield-impersonator father. My favorite line from this article is Jo's response to whether the game is intended to be carried around with you: "It's a little big for a purse, but if you had it in your purse, I'd respect you. It's the size of two oranges." Punderdome is now a home card game

1 Interesting Thing:

Tim Lomas is a scientist at the University of East London. As he studied positive psychology, he discovered that an obstacle to his research was how limited our English vocabulary is for describing positive emotions. So Lomas started compiling terms for positive emotional states in other languages that can't be translated directly into English. The result is a surprisingly beautiful list of joys from around the world like "the desire to eat simply for the taste" in Spanish or "the irresistible urge to pinch someone because you love them so much" in Tagalog. You can see them all online and even suggest your own additions: The Positive Lexicography Project (h/t Ingrid Fetell)

Now boarding... by Chris Duffy

I'm on a plane to Charleston, SC right now to do some shows this weekend. Everyone had already boarded but we weren't leaving because we were still waiting on one passenger. It's an early flight and so I was feeling a little frustrated about being delayed. I turn to my seatmate and say "It better be someone good we're waiting for." As I'm saying it, Bill Murray boards the plane and they shut the door.

This is 100% not a joke.

BURLINGTON, VT:
I'm here with the hilarious guys from Good Cop, Great Cop. We had a great time last night at the new Vermont Comedy Club and we're doing two more performances tonight (1/30 at 7 p.m. and at 9:30 p.m.)  Link

CHARLESTON, SC:
Thursday, February 4th at 7 p.m. Dr. Phil Manning is one of the world's most successful dinosaur hunters. He's discovered all sorts of unbelievable fossils and is the host of NatGeo's Jurassic CSI . I'll be doing a show with him, talking dinosaurs, and playing a bunch of fun audience games at this Darwin Week event. Link

1 Thing I Think Is Great:

Working from home, I sometimes have days where I wonder if gmail is broken. Maybe no one is responding to my emails because of a technical problem? It's a very convenient daydream. I've used it for a long time now. But I've finally got a much better list of excuses, categorized by date. My personal favorite is "Mar. 28-Apr.3: They thought your e-mail was an April Fools' joke." Why the People You E-mailed Aren't E-mailing You Back, By Week

1 Thing That Made Me Laugh:

Charlie Harding and Nate Sloan are the hosts of a fantastic podcast called Switched on Pop, about the "making and meaning of popular music." Nate was busy this week so I got to fill in and Charlie taught me all of the the history of political walk-on music. I never thought I'd have a Martin Van Buren diss-track stuck in my head, but here we are. The whole episode was so fun to tape and hilarious. Charlie named the episode after Richard Nixon's unfortunate theme song: Click With Dick

1 Interesting Thing:

This article is ostensibly about how prisoners survive solitary confinement. But it's actually about our ability to create an entire world inside our minds and the power of meditation. The experience of Johnny Perez, a prisoner who spent three full years in solitary confinement is both triumphant and humbling. (Side note: I've been reading a lot more from this magazine, Nautilus, and all of their articles are fascinating and really well-researched.)How to Survive Solitary Confinement
